Learning with family and friends

Since its creation the SCCNRS has organized various educational activities for landowners, watershed users as well as the general public. The goal of these activities is to inform and educate the public concerning species and their habitats which are threatened, rare or simply little know which are found in the Salmon River watershed. Presented by professionals and often joined with field outings, these activities will offer you and your family captivating and memorable experiences.

Season of the anurans
Each year, at the end of spring or the beginning of summer, the Société de conservation du corridor naturel de la rivière au Saumon (SCCNRS) in cooperation with the Comité du Marais de Kingsbury (MAKI), presents an activity on anurans. What is an anuran you ask? You have probably already heard them in early spring not far from wher you live… peep…peep… peep… it’s the chorus of the Spring Peeper and other frogs!

Our annual frog activity will allow you to hear and observe different species of frogs in Quebec. You will get to “meet” them up close in our aquariums as well as hear them singing in the Kingsbury Marsh. The evening includes a short presentation to familiarize you with each of our species, followed by a field trip to listen to and observe them in their natural habitat. It’s an event for the whole family… but don’t forget your flashlight and your boots!

Bats
Autumn is in full swing and it’s pumpkin season! Yes…it is the best time to discover bats with the SCCNRS and MAKI. Do not miss this activity! Dr. Marc Gauthier, wildlife biologist, presents an exposé on the bats of the rivièr au Saumon watershed. Did you know that the abandoned mines can serve as hibernation sites for thousands of bats? Following a presentation at the Kingsbury Municipal office, Dr. Gauthier will lead you to a bat hibernation site where you can look at them up close in their natural surroundings. It’s always exciting to discover new things andy ou won’t look at these tiny mammals the in the same way after this evening.

Birds
Are you fascinated by the winged world? The SCCNRS often holds conferences on birds such as raptors, waterfowl or the birds of our forests. Recognized ornithologists, such as Suzanne Brûlotte and Serge Beaudette, host our conferences and give you the opportunity to learn about species such as the bald eagle, the northern saw-whet owl or the golden-winged warbler. They present the birds of Quebec while according special attention to rare, threatened or endangered species. These presentations are also offered in cooperation with the Société de Loisirs Ornithologiques de l’Estrie (SLOE) a group of amateur ornithlogists in the Eastern Townships. The SCCNRS invites you to discover these birds and their habitats in the rivière au Saumon watershed.
